No, because liberalism was always on the Left. When Socialism arose later liberalism moved to the centre, since really rather few people will take up arms to fight for free trade and total free markets compared to tradition, nation, race, Church, etc. Social-liberalism came about when some liberals realised the obvious : freedom from the STATE is only one type of freedom, a company or oligarch can be equally powerful and tyrannical. (I am anti-all liberalism)

NO, the terms liberal and conservative have to do with the government's approach to the constitution. A liberal interpretation to our constitution means you read it liberally, thereby being a flexible. A conservative means a limited reading of the contract between our states, meaning the government cannot and should not take liberties with our constract that we call the constitution. Yes the root word for liberalism is liberty, but the term us used in how our government takes "liberties."

So, the term is used about how our government reads the constitution "liberally," thereby taking "liberties" with their power. Yes liberalism by the people means liberty. Liberalism by a government means liberally using their power over the people. WE know what liberalism is and the root word is liberty. But, when we debate liberalism vs. conservatism, we are talking about the liberal approach to governing.

In fact when one is discussing the freedoms or civil liberties of the people, I am very liberal. When we are talking about the approach, reach or execution of governance, then I am very conservative. I believe a government should be very conservative with the powers that have been delegated to them-using those powers reluctantly, conservatively and as little as possibly thereby protecting the rights of the sovereign people of the sovereign states.

So I hope I'm not spoiling your attempt to understand modern political labels when I point out that the terms liberal and conservative, along with left and right, originated in the French pre-revolutionary parliment, and continued to be defined by events and changes during and after the French revolution. (Wikipedia is informative.) Todays liberals are a misnomer. Socialist is more like it. Todays true liberals call themselves libertarian.

George Washington was a conservative??? I dunno about that... Saying that is a little much. I prefer to call him a liberal, even if liberalism today isn't the same as "classical liberalism" back then. He still would not have been anywhere near what the GOP stands for today, which is what conservatism today is defined as by the beltway.

As for today's GOP they stand no where close to true conservatism even if it smacked them upside their heads. As for the "beltway" they are loose as a goose and by know means they have monopoly over the conservative principles.

Actually Washington would be more of a Libertarian then a liberal. He secured our liberty against the British Empire attempt of colonizing. And here at home remained "conservative" when it came to government role in the affairs of its citizens. Example, Washington turned down to become the "King" of New England. Because he would be no different than King George of England grabbing power after he fought for independence.

Well...filmzo I'm afraid it did not used to mean the same thing and you might want to look it up. Politically speaking a liberal even as far back as the Wilson years had no intention to make government role in peoples lives less including affairs on a global scale. Libertarianism was not responsible for every war this country has faced, its been Liberalism. But that is not to say that a person of liberal philosophy may not have a streak of libertarian values.
